About Sweet Georgia
The song “Sweet Georgia” was written by Jessica Wachs throughout the night of January 6th, 2021 as a response to the terrorist attack that occurred at the Capitol hours before. To help preserve the truth about the government’s glaring systemic racism and hypocrisy, capture the emotions transpiring from the attack, and acknowledge the tremendous source of hope and inspiration that was Georgia as it stepped up as a political leader, “Sweet Georgia” was created to be an emotional time capsule and observational piece of our current status with civil rights. The song also recognizes the efforts of progressive leaders new and old, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and, Stacey Abrams, and her hard-working Georgian political team. While this song was inspired by 2021, it is intended to act as an ongoing reminder of how far the civil rights movement has come as well as how far there is yet to go as our nation breaks through the nightmare of inequality and strives towards Martin Luther King’s Dream.
